After the death of his father, in a farming accident,
seventeen-year-old Troy, his mother and two brothers sell the farm
to pay off debts and funeral expenses, and take up residence in a
modest home in the city. Away from the farm that he loved and
without his father, Troy is now forced into the unfamiliar setting
of a large urban high school. To make matters worse, courses he had
taken in the country school are not available in the urban setting;
so Troy is forced to enroll in a drama class to get his credits. How
demeaning!
Troy struggles to fulfill his new role as the man of
the house and meet the challenges of a country boy in a city school.
He faces a whole new world where he has to learn valuable lessons in
a big hurry. His only solace is his love for the piano, the memories
of his mother and brothers—until he meets Shenade Johnson in drama
class.
